Marvel’s Spiderman Review - The True Spidey Experience

Marvel's Spiderman is a great PS4 game and an amazing super hero game but a few shoehorned in elements keep it from being perfect

Marvel’s Spiderman released on the PS4 and Ps4 Pro is by far one of the best super hero games of all time, not only does it rival the Arkham series but also exceeds it, thus setting a new bar for super hero games.
Presentation-
On the base of it Spiderman’s version of New York looks- well- amazing (pun intended). The city is very lively, full of energy and doesn’t feel like just an empty world to serve as a commute between missions.
As for the story, it is very well written and captures what Spiderman is all about by showing both Peter’s life as the wall-crawler as well as a citizen of New York trying to pay rent. The story starts with arrest of Kingpin which starts a whole chain of events as crime rate increases Peter finds himself in the middle of a conspiracy to kill the mayor.
Gameplay-
If there is one way to sum up the gameplay in one line it would be “It makes you feel like Spiderman”.Your main mode of traversal is Web Swinging and it’s executed perfectly, making it smooth, but at the same time requiring a certain amount of skill. Also, there are challenges and boss fights that let you make the most of your ability to web swing. There are also a lot of tricks you can perform to make sure that you keep the momentum going and never having to touch the ground. The city is (quite literally) your playground, and is full of side missions to perform, collectibles to find, and random crimes to bust which brings us to the combat.

The combat is very smooth and fast flowing, utilizing everything in Spiderman’s bag of tricks (Insomniac deserves big appreciation on this one). The game usually sends big group of enemies towards you so attacking and dodging and the right time turns the combat into a graceful ballet of punches and webs. Spiderman can also use variety of gadgets at his disposal as well as suit powers which you unlock by crafting suits, which brings me to another great thing about the game-it provides incentive to the player to hunt collectibles- you need to complete the side activities if you want to unlock all the suits. As great as the game is it does have one problem- Stealth. It just feels token with the basic tactic being to distract then takedown and, frankly, it doesn’t evolve much further than that. The plus point, however, is that it is optional to use stealth when you play as Peter. However, when you play as Peter’s friends, it is necessary. At certain points in the game you take control of Miles Morales or Mary Jane- these parts are just forced stealth sections which kill the pacing a little. They had potential to be much more- For example, in one mission, Mary Jane is held hostage and has to distract the guards for Peter to take them out. This shows how much better these sections could have been.
Verdict-
At its core, Marvel’s Spiderman for the PS4 is the definitive superhero experience, and the forced stealth sections are nothing more than petty niggles around a solid core. All in all, Marvel’s Spiderman is a must have game for all PS4 owners and is a well deserved video game outing for the wallcrawler
